It was a typical Friday night and I was getting ready to paint the town red in my new Louboutin’s and this adorable little Just Cavalli shirt I just bought earlier in the week. Dressed in my best (of the week) and feeling like $1200 (cost of le chic out...

When it comes to sushi, everyone is pretty convinced that they’ve got the answer. I’ve been told by way too many people that their ‘spot’ has the best sushi. And time and time again, I’ve been utterly dissatisfied. So, now I’m going to tell you my little secret…

Along the main avenue of San Diego’s largest growing beach community; tucked in so discreetly that you’ve probably passed it a dozen times, lies an unexpected gem. It is called Zen 5. I discovered Zen 5 about six years ago and it’s always been my go-to spot after disappointing attempts to find something more impressive.

The second you walk in, you know that you’ve arrived at someplace special. Mellow reggae music pumps though the restaurant in this bustling environment full of life. You’ll be immediately greeted by smiles and high spirits. It’s a perfect place for a casual first date or getting a group of friends together and just hitting the town! Now that you’re settled in, it’s time for the food! You have your choice of the traditional Japanese style full multi-course recipes, but I come to Zen 5 for the sushi!

What sets Zen 5 apart from the rest is not only the freshness of their food, the presentation of its delivery and the high quality experience it presents to your palette…but the amount of thought and creativity put into their sushi combinations. Every time I come in, they’ve got a new ‘special roll’ that I can try. Of course, there are always my must have personal favs: The PB Roll +with cream cheese(trust me on this), Rock ‘n Roll, and Pizza Roll! This combination of traditional; fried and baked sushi on one plate, puts me in absolute delight!

So, when you get into another conversation and start arguing about who has the ‘best sushi’ in San Diego, drop everything and head right down to Zen 5. Ask for Kathy to seat you, she’s our favorite!
